J P Harper is a lover of speculative fiction and fantasy, and writes adventure stories for readers both young and old who love portals, strange worlds, impossible choices, and heroes who do not feel heroic at first.
Jamie Cooper and the Touchscreen Portal is the first book in a new fantasy–science fiction series about friendship, courage, gaming, grief, found family and the discovery that some worlds are far more real than they first appear.
When not writing, J P Harper enjoys imagining impossible places, asking “what if?”, and building stories where ordinary people can find themselves at the centre of extraordinary events.
A Senior Systems Engineer for over a decade, and with a background in the digital arts, J P Harper has lived and worked on three continents in as many decades, but was born and resides in London with his family, including Toffee the dog. As a two-time survivor of cancer, he finds satisfaction in knowing that something as simple as words, whether written or spoken, can bring comfort, courage, laughter, escape, and a little light when it is needed most.

A mysterious message. A hidden gateway. A world that feels more real than reality.
Twelve-year-old Jamie Cooper is trying to survive a new town, a new school and the silence left behind by his missing older brother.
Then his tablet starts glitching in the middle of the night.
Strange messages appear. A glowing symbol forms on the screen. And one touch sends Jamie hurtling into Myridiam — a spectacular fantasy world of magical artefacts, monster attacks, rival kingdoms and secrets older than history.
At first, it feels like an incredible virtual reality video game. But is Myridiam really a game, or something else?
Thrown into a conflict far bigger than he understands, Jamie must team up with two unlikely classmates: the school outcast with a talent for combat, and a quick-thinking genius with skills of her own.
Together, they must unlock their powers, survive deadly enemies and protect a world hanging on the edge of war.
But Jamie’s greatest quest is the one he never expected: finding the link between Myridiam… and his missing brother!

Irregular entries, updates, reflections and ravings from the writing nook.
One of the more amusing discoveries of first-time self-publishing is that finishing the book is not, in fact, the moment when everything calms down and sensible congratulations begin.
One of the more entertaining surprises of preparing to publish a first book is discovering that “building a mailing list” is spoken about in the same hushed, reverent tones once reserved for hidden treasure or lost civilisations.
Last June, after starting chemotherapy, I found myself with an unusual amount of time to think. Not always cheerfully, I’ll admit, and not always in places I’d have chosen for creative reflection.
